Planning A Bridal / Wedding Shower
Step 1: Identify the host and set a budget.
Traditionally, a female relative or family friend hosts the shower, but today it's common for any enthusiastic friend or family member to host. Once the host or hosts are identified, have a clear conversation about budgets and expectations.
Step 2: Create the guest list.
Whether you’re the bride, or you’re planning the shower on behalf of the bride-to-be, the first thing you’ll need to prepare is the guest list. This will determine the venue and will be the biggest impact on the event's budget. Please be mindful that any guest invited to the shower will likely expect an invitation to the wedding as well.
What about a wedding shower? Wedding Showers are almost identical to Bridal Showers in that the goal is to celebrate the newly engaged couple and 'shower' them with love, support, and yes, gifts. The difference is that a wedding shower is a co-ed affair which works well for couples where both parties want to be included in wedding events, and for LGBTQ+ couples.
Step 3: Pick a theme.
While a theme is not necessary, it will help drive the decor, venue, and invitation decisions, tying the elements of your party together and making it feel more elevated and personal. The theme can be as simple as 'celebratory brunch', or as specific as a '1970s disco' party. As long as it connects back to the guest(s) of honor, it's sure to be a hit!

Step 4: Secure a venue.
Once you know the budget and guest list, you'll need to find a space to host the party. This might be someone's home, a local park, a restaurant, or even a larger event space depending on your needs. As you look at possible options, consider how many people will be attending, how formal you'd like the event to be, and which (if any) theme you'll be using.
Step 5: Send out invitations.
Send out the invitations either electronically or in the mail about six weeks prior to the event. In addition to the party details, be sure to include an RSVP deadline and the couple's registry information.
Step 6: Do the prep work.
Finalize the food and drink options, purchase decorations, and plan any games or activities to keep guests entertained during the party. Some common shower games include gift bingo, wedding mad libs, guess the dress, and trivia about the couple.
Step 7: Set up the space and celebrate with your loved ones!
Step 8: Say thanks!
If you are the guest(s) of honor, write heartfelt thank-yous to the guests and the host. Try to send these out within 1-2 weeks of the event.
